The oxygen sensor monitors the exhaust flow in the system and compares the amount of oxygen in the inlet to the surrounding air. When the oxygen content is low, the sensor voltage is high. When the oxygen content is high, the sensor voltage is low. The voltage generated by the sensor is sent to the DME (Engine Control Module) to assist in maintaining the proper fuel mixture. This mixed formulation is used to maintain the highest efficiency of catalytic converter operation. Most oxygen sensors have four wires. Two of them are used for oxygen sensor heating and two for signal. The heater is used to bring the sensor online faster. Previous products used exhaust heat. One wire provides the ground as a signal to the sensor and the other wire provides ground for the sensor signal.
